| The 2012 fixtures are out! | Posted on 2012-02-01 | |
![]() | The J.League have revealed the full list of fixtures for 2012. The first two fixtures were released last month as an appetiser but now all 34 are in the open and as usual some dates stick out a lot more than others. Here's our pick of five matches to look out for: Kawasaki Frontale (H), April 14th Clashes between Gamba and Frontale are never dull and with Jose Carlos Serrao looking likely to continue the Gamba tradition of attacking football you can put your money on this one being yet another high scoring affair. It'll be tough to beat the bar set by the nine goal thriller of 2011 but I'm sure the teams will give it a good go. Consadole Sapporo (A), June 23rd Sapporo are another of the new faces to J1 for 2012 and this season will see Gamba travel to the Sapporo Dome for the first time. Gamba have never won a league match away to Consadole at any of their other homes so they will be hoping that the Dome proves to be a much better hunting ground! Cerezo Osaka (H), August 11th Gamba travel to Nagai Stadium in the second week but we'll have to wait until Summer for the return fixture with Gamba's lovable neighbours popping in to visit in August. Gamba haven't lost to the Pigs at home in league play since 2003 and may well be looking to complete a double over them if all goes well in March. Sagan Tosu (A), September 1st Gamba's first trip to Tosu for a league encounter comes at the start of September. Bsed on previous years the newly promoted side could be locked in either a relegation battle or title battle by then so either way the tie is likely to be intense. Gamba will be looking to preserve their 100% win record against the Kyushu club. Jubilo Iwata (A), December 1st For the third consecutive year Gamba will finish the season in Shizuoka prefecture, this time visiting Jubilo Iwata rather than their neighbours Shimizu S-Pulse. Gamba captain Tomokazu Myojin could very well get his hands on the J.League trophy at the end of this match if the title goes to the wire again and if Gamba come out on top this time! Of course there are plenty more matches where they came from including our regular clashes with Urawa and Yasuyuki Konno's return to Tokyo. | Korean striker Lee signs in! | Posted on 2012-02-01
![]() | Gamba have signed striker Lee Seung-Yeoul from FC Seoul. The young Korean is one of South Korea's rising stars and promises to be an interesting addition to Serrao's squad. The signing fills Gamba's foreign player quota for 2012 and restores the South Korean influence in the club following the departure of Lee Keun-Ho and Kim Seung-Yong to Ulsan Hyundai last month. His ability to play out wide and as a support forward means that he shares more than just his family name with the former of those two and he is expected to fulfil a similar role to Gamba's top scorer from 2011. Gamba are believed to have parted with a sum in the region of €1.49 million (approx. ¥150 million, £1.25 million, US$2 million) to prise the South Korea international from Seoul, where he had spent all four years of his career so far, after having their original attempt to bring him in on loan turned down. Seung-Yeoul was named as K-League Rookie of the Year following his debut season in 2008 and has since gone on to represent his national side on the biggest stage of all after a 5 minute cameo at the end of South Korea's 2-0 win over Greece in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He fell out of favour for the Taegeuk Warriors in 2011 after a drop of form, ironically losing his place just as Lee Keun-Ho began to force his way back into the reckoning as a result of his form for Gamba. He will no doubt be hoping that this new challenge will have the same outcome for him and so are we! | A new era begins! | Posted on 2012-01-19
![]() | Gamba's 2012 pre-season officially kicked off today with some interesting announcements. Firstly, Tomokazu Myojin remains in his position of captain but following the departure of former vice-captain Satoshi Yamaguchi a new deputy needed to be chosen and Yasuhito Endo will be that man. Secondly, there were a lot of departures and arrivals during the Winter and this means a lot of players changing squad numbers. Below is a list of all the movers and shakers: 4. Hiroki Fujiharu (Previously #15) 5. Daiki Niwa (Returning from loan) 6. Shigeru Yokotani (Previously #25) 11. Paulinho (New signing) 13. Shinichi Terada (Returning from loan) 14. Shu Kurata (Returning from loan) 15. Yasuyuki Konno (New signing) 19. Kotaro Omori (Previously #31) 20. Akihiro Sato (New signing) 22. Yohei Takeda (New signing) 25. Hiroyuki Abe (New signing) 26. Takaharu Nishino (Promoted from youth) 27. Tatsuya Uchida (Previously #30) 28. Katsuhisa Inamori (Promoted from youth) 30. Eduardo (New signing) 31. Ken Tajiri (Promoted from youth) The rumours of Konno taking the number 15 shirt were true after all. Paulinho takes over the number 11 from Usami and the number 22 shirt returns into the hands of a goalkeeper after just over a year in the possession of former striker Lee Keun-Ho. As is traditional, there is also a new slogan for the 2012 season. This year the club have gone with the simple "Yakudo.", which translates literally to "lively motion" or "throb". Make of that what you will! The uniforms are to remain the same as last season. Although the special Brazil-inspired "cup away" strip that made a total of two or three appearances last season seems to have been dropped. That's all to report for now. Let's hope for a lot of lively, throbbing football from Gamba in 2012! | Tags New Season |

| Opening J.League fixtures revealed. | Posted on 2012-01-17 | |
![]() | Gamba's 2012 league campaign will begin with a local derby double header. The opening round of fixtures takes place on the weekend of March 10th and Gamba will begin at home to Kansai rivals Vissel Kobe. The match promises to be a special affair as it will mark the return to Banpaku of Hideo Hashimoto and Kazumichi Takagi, both of whom departed following the completion of the 2011 season. Gamba completed a double over Vissel last season, winning 3-2 at home and 4-0 on the road, but they may not have it as easy this time round as Vissel have reinforced well over the Winter and look a much tougher proposition than they did last Summer. The second round of fixtures has thrown up an even more mouthwatering tie as Gamba will make their shortest away trip of the season by heading to the Nagai Stadium for the 36th Osaka derby. This clash will also feature a player returning to face former team-mates as Shu Kurata - on loan with Cerezo last term - will be hoping to put his ties with the pink half of Osaka to bed by inspiring an away win. Last season saw Gamba come out on top in the two league meetings, winning 2-1 at home on the opening day despite a goal from the aforementioned Kurata and then drawing 1-1 at the Nagai. This good record was somewhat tainted by the Champions League defeat so expect another intense and tight battle. The full list of fixtures will be released on February 1st so check back then for further details including the date of the Banpaku derby and clashes with our favourite foe - Urawa Reds. | Tags Fixtures J.League New Season Osaka Derby |

| Gamba finally get their man! | Posted on 2012-01-16 | |
![]() | The month-and-a-half long Konno transfer saga has finally reached a conclusion today with the result favouring Gamba as Yasuyuki Konno has become a Gamba player! The centre back was originally linked with Gamba at the end of November but, despite the two clubs being reported to have agreed a deal, Gamba were forced to wait to speak with Yasuyuki as he quite admirably wanted to focus on helping his former club in their Emperor's Cup campaign. Konno and FC Tokyo went on to win the trophy and seal Champions League football in the process, leading to worries that the Japan international would opt to stay in Tokyo. This worry was further increased as time dragged on following the cup final with no word from either side on the deal being complete. News sources regularly announced that the deal was close and would be completed soon but still no deal came - until today, that is, when the transfer was finally completed. Yasuyuki becomes the 9th new face at Gamba for 2012 and is more than a capable replacement for outgoing centre back Satoshi Yamaguchi. Capped 47 times for his country, he has a wealth of experience and talent to call upon and promises to be a top player for Gamba in 2012 and beyond. He has also already made his mark on Gamba's history by scoring the goal that denied Cerezo the 2005 J.League title, ensuring that it would end up at Banpaku instead.
